The popular reef diving sites from Pompano Beach
thru Fort Lauderdale area are found on three distinct limestone
reef lines known as the first, second and third reefs. These
ledges run parallel to the shore and are often hidden under the
sand for long stretches. An experienced charter captain is
a must for all but the first reef.
For beach divers, the distance
from the beach to the first reef line varies from 100-300 yards
and depths range from 10-15 feet and up to 30 feet in a few spots.
The first reef is a great spot for new divers and
snorkelers in Fort Lauderdale who will see sea fans, sponges and
thousands of multicolored tropical fish.
Scuba diving the 2nd reef takes place about 1/2 mile
offshore with depths from 30-40 feet and has better visibility.
Some parts of the reef can be as high as 10 feet off the bottom.
Divers will find the 3rd reef is about 1 mile offshore
and reaches depths of 60-100 feet.
For more information, ask a local dive shop or scuba
diving charter captain.
